A Bowl of Mushroom Soup With a Large Side of Grace

My grand mother lived with us one winter when I was about four.  She made my favorite lunch, day in and day out.  Every day, when Gramma asked what I wanted to eat, I replied, “Mushroom Soup.”  She heated the canned soup and I crumbled crackers into the warm concoction every day; seems like Gramma never tired of making the Mushroom Soup that I asked for.

Now, come forward many years; when my grand-daughter, Hannah, was only 3 or 4, she was asked what she wanted to eat. Her reply was always, “corn dog”.  “Chicken nuggets?” “Nope, corn dog.”  “Hotdog”? Nope, corn dog.”  On and on .. always the same and always getting what she asked for – a corn dog.  Day in and day out Hannah’s mom or dad prepared her corn dog.

Are you seeing a pattern? There’s a lesson here, but I’m sometimes slow to get it!  How about you?  Are YOU always right-on, hearing from God?  Do you always know when the Holy Spirit is nudging you in a certain (different?) direction?  No?  Neither do I.

One day, not too long ago, I planned to attend a new Bible Study. I’d been invited by a friend; a person whose Christian walk I admire; a person whose faith can be seen and heard. Not only did I not want to miss the gathering, I especially didn’t want to be late.

Sure enough, I changed my mind about what to wear as the temperature had dropped.  Next, my curling iron got stuck in my long hair not once, but twice.  ‘Grumble’ is bubbling to the surface, and I remembered to ask: BELIEVING.  I did, and the hot, brush-type thing came undone! (Here is where Gomer Pyle should enter and shout, “Surprise! Surprise!”).

With these delays, I left my home about 5 minutes later than planned.  I was upset, and grumbling, and, oh yes, praying, “Please God help me find the house and not be late.”  Every single light was red and there were a zillion cars at every stop sign.  I had never been to this home, nor was I familiar with the neighborhood. I prayed more than once, and I complained.

Nevertheless, I arrived at the address at exactly 10:00!  Nary a car was in site in the driveway nor on the street, so I called my friend only to learn that 10:00 A.M. was when people began to arrive; the exact time was “negotiable”.

As I got out of my car, a gentle touch in my spirit spoke to me, “When you pray for something; why don’t you believe that I will answer? You asked and I heard, and still you checked your watch.  Wouldn’t it be easier just to pray, believe and let Me answer”?

Matthew 21:22  And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Matthew 7:9  Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

Matthew 7:7  Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:  and again in .. Luke 11:9       And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you

John 4:10   Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

So, when I asked my gramma for Mushroom soup, she gave it to me.  When Hannah asked for a corn dog, she got it and when I asked Abba Father to get me to the house on time, He did it!

1 Corinthians 1:9  God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

He wants to bless us. He wants to bless me. I’m one of His kids.  Perhaps tomorrow, I’ll ask in prayer  and hush.  Then, maybe, just maybe I’ll be very, very quiet.  Maybe I’ll just sit down expecting and wait for my Mushroom soup.
